The first event of the BMSG was held in Transylvania by the members of the Romania-based Milvus Group and the Hungary-based Bükk Mammalogical Society. During the first session of the trip the team surveyed the potential habitat of Southern birch mouse (S. subtilis cf. trizona) near Kolozsvár, where some specimens have been found recently in owl pellets. Pellets were also collected again and 180 pitfalls were dug out - without any success - during the field-work.
Next, we moved to the Gyergyó-Basin where the Northern birch mouse (S. betulina) was targeted. Two specimens were caught, the first one was grabbed by hand while the second was trapped with pitfall.
